When people encounter a new space they subconsciously ask themselves if
the place is safe, is it someplace they want to linger, if so where is
the best place to rest, and so on… The landscape architect is
responsible for understanding the reaction people will have to
different spaces.
The first impression of a place should be succinct,
interesting, and well articulated – in the correct setting it should
also maintain with a sense of mystery. These
principles guide the design of outdoor entrance spaces. Whether
it is the entrance to a property from the road, the front door of a
house or a garden gate, these are significant spaces that will be
remembered. Ultimately, the first impression of a place determines the
way we feel about it.
